In the third tier, the wrestler will be completely exhausted, even being unable to perform their finishing moves should it drop too low. The stamina meter can also be turned off or adjusted to drain more slowly, and will slowly regenerate as long as a meter is not depleted. The game's submission system has been revamped.
The "Breaking Point" gauge has been replaced with a two part circular gauge. The mechanic of the system remains mostly the same, but players only have to mash a single button rather than all four. Signature moves can now be stored as well. Catch and Catapult finishers have also returned. Both fighting styles and skill sets have been brought in to ensure that the characters behave more like their real-life counterparts.
For example, high flyers like Rey Mysterio will not do power moves and will focus on diving and springboard moves while giants like Big Show cannot climb the turnbuckle and will focus on power moves. Superstars who cannot climb to the top rope can climb to the second rope and deliver moves such as Bret Hart's elbow drop or Big Show's slingshot body splash.
Gameplay on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox versions remains largely the same blueprint as previous entries in the series. However, new rosters, new arenas, new championship titles and new contents have been introduced.
Match types Match types for all versions have been significantly enhanced. Occasionally you will have some clipping and physics issues with inanimate objects and weapons but overall, the improvements are welcome.
Since 2K took over proceedings in the production of WWE titles, the story mode has been growing in quality ever since, with more intricate details being added, voice acting being on point, sub-stories and feuds being peppered into the main plot, training and publicity were a factor. There were different stories for those who chose to be heels.
Overall it has been a real coming of age story and 2K15 should have been the culmination of all this progress to produce a masterclass in entertainment. What we got, however, was a bland story with a handful of side plots that were uninspired or interesting.
There is the showcase mode that allows you to recreate the most amazing moments in WWE history but even this feels a little stale and some inclusions just seem thoughtless and the omissions seem even more so. There seems to be a reason why the story mode seemed so simplistic and streamlined. The whole game has picked the previous sequel for parts. The creation mode has been scaled back drastically, with no way to create custom stories, custom belts or even a female wrestler which is baffling, even five years ago.
This even translates to the wrestling cast with names of the time like Sin Cara and Zach Rider inexplicably not making the cut. This game has some strong points in the form of its graphical detail and showcase matches. It has some divisive assets such as its slower-paced action. Though, what stands out above all is the abundance of weak points with this title. Take Cesaro, who is given a rating of 93 one of the highest in the game but is currently languishing in the tag-team division with Tyson Kid.
The one plus side to this is that CM Punk still puts in an appearance — straight edge fans take note, this will probably be the last time he appears in a WWE game roster. This makes it the same game as last year - only better looking.
That said, maybe next year will see 2K Games committing to continue down the road they have started on. And, maybe next year we could also see the PC version be released in a more timely fashion.
